The primary full-scale production on which they acted was Romeo and Juliet for the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS), John Gielgud’s appearance as a director. The big benefit of this started with an offer from Gielgud to design Gordon Daviot’s Richard of Bordeaux, which started at the New Theatre in St Martins Lane, London, in February 1933.
The production has been a huge success, reaching the stage of the show, where the players are queuing up every night. It is widely known that this success was due to Motley’s sets and costumes, which took the essence of the time in the art sense rather than in the sense of slavery, and was more popular for their beauty and light. This early recognition led to ten busy and very successful years when they became regular partners of Gielgud, working with him on productions such as Romeo and his famous Juliet (1935), where he replaced Romeo and Mercutio with Laurence Olivier and his 1936 Hamlet.
